Svedhana (Herbal Steam Therapy)

In Ayurveda , Sweat/Steam Therapy ( Svedhana) is used to effectively dislodge and liquefy the toxins and improve digestion. It is done only after the oleation (oil treatment / oil massage on the body). With the help of  Svedhana, Ama (undigested food toxins) easily starts flowing from the tissues back to the GI track. and blood circulation also improves. This also helps to relieve and reduce fat tissue and muscle tension. When the toxins are back in GI track, they are easily expelled from the body with the help of Panchakarma therapies. Appropriate herbs or essentials oils are added to the steam. Traditionally in Ayurveda, Svedhana is suggested in conditions, such as: cold, cough, headache, earache, constipation, arthritis, poor metabolism, poor blood circulation, poor thyroid functioning etc..

In certain cases, Swedhana is not recommended, for example, heart disease, high blood pressure, after purgation, skin diseas es, anemia, jaundice, during pregnancy, during mensturation.

Swedhana is an important treatment during Panchakarma, specially for vata and kapha imbalances.
